Historie
Schraml – The Stonewood Distillery traces its roots back to 1818 in Erbendorf, Steinwald. The story begins with Johann Baptist Schraml, who as a grain distiller started the family’s spirit distillation. Over generations new eras and expansions followed: Jakob Schraml (1821–1890) had sales and trading activities alongside the craft; Christoph-Karl Schraml (Karl) focused more on cask types and expansion of fruit brandy; Josef Schraml (1895–1954) led the company through difficult times and added Mocca-Likör and Kirsch-Whisky; Alois Schraml (1934–2017) further developed the Steinwald assortment and established Obts- and Liqueur lines. In 1954 Steinwald Whisky and Gin appeared; in 1977 production moved to the old Propstei, and in the 1990s investments were made in expansion and automation.
In 2004, the Schraml siblings Gregor and Martin ramped up the Stonewood brand and introduced Stonewood Drà and Stonewood 1818, which marked the beginning of international recognition. Since then the Schraml family has continued in the 6th generation, and in the years that followed several Whisky variants and premium releases were launched. In 2022 Stonewood Warehouse II opened as showroom and warehouse, and in 2024 they held the third festival for German whisky. In 2025 the name was strengthened to Schraml – The Stonewood Distillery.
Produktion / Fremstilling
Schraml expresses a strong love of craftsmanship and tradition. Their production takes place in the old Propstei in Erbendorf and combines traditional craft with new technology. They describe the process as: mashing, maceration, distillation, and blending, accompanied by sensory and analytical control points. Their local habitat Steinwald influences their approach to raw materials and processes, and they place emphasis on hygiene and control across the entire chain from raw material selection to bottling.
The distillation facilities use copper stills equipment, stainless steel, timber houses and oak warehouses. Their cask types are various: white oak, Limousin oak, Virgin Oak, Sherry, Port, Madeira and Marsala, with risks of oxidation, evaporation and the angels’ share. Newmake is stored on site and given time to mature and develop character in faceted wooden casks.
