History

Mahrs Bräu Bamberg is a family-owned brewery in Wunderburg, Bamberg. The family has run the brewery for four generations and has been in the family's ownership since 1895. The company remains faithful to Bavaria's Reinheitsgebot of 1516 and focuses on tradition and craft rather than mass production. Their beers range from pale pilsners to dark lagers and special specialties, and the brewery conveys a strong regional identity in a warm, down-to-earth atmosphere.

Production / Manufacturing

Mahrs Bräu modernized the entire brewery in 2020/21 and implemented energy-saving measures through new steam pads and steam kettles. The brewery receives regional green power from Bamberg and is certified in the Umwelt- und Klimapakt Bayern. Hops come from Hallertau and are hand-picked in varieties such as Hallertauer Tradition, Perle, Hersbrucker, Callista and Herkules, which give the beers their characteristic flavor. Emphasis is placed on sustainability and collaboration with the local community.

Whisky / Mahrs Bräu Whiskey

Mahrs Bräu also produces whiskey: Mahrs Bräu Whiskey is a single malt, aged in French barrique casks and further refined in rum, cognac, or sherry casks. The whiskey is described as vanilla-like with a mild, rounded finish. It has been mentioned in Meininger's Craft as part of a blind tasting and shown as one of the brewery's products.

Products

Mahrs Bräu offers nine different beer specialties, including U, Pils, Helles Vollbier, E.T.A. (Dunkles Lager), Sommerpils as well as Weisser Bock and Weizenbock; the beers are described by color and category on the brewery’s website, and over the years they have received various awards.

Visits and Experiences

Part of the Mahrs Bräu experience are local spots such as Entla's Keller Erlangen, described as beer culture gurus with a long tradition and hosting guided tours (Führungen). This gives visitors the opportunity to explore the city’s beer culture and the history behind the brewery and its cellars.

Philosophy

Mahrs Bräu presents tradition and craft as central values. They are a family business tied to Bamberg for generations and work to preserve authentic brewing and regional ingredients. They emphasize quality, regional responsibility and environmentally friendly solutions, and they stay true to their identity as a smaller, independent Bavarian brewery.
