History
Fesslermill1396 Whisky- og Gindestillerie is a Swabian gem located in Mettertal on the edge of Stromberg and steeped in the century-old tradition of Fessler Mühle. The distillery continues the tradition of Mettermalt whisky and various distillates as well as liqueurs based on old recipes. The Baden-Württemberg region and Sersheim take pride in regionality and tradition, and the milling operation is linked to the mill and the long family history.
Production/Manufacturing
The grain for Mettermalt whisky is cultivated and selected with care; milling takes place on the 1870 milling wheel, which allows a wide variation of grain sizes and grades. The stone is pre-cut by millmasters and requires painstaking work as it did a hundred years ago. The grain for Mettermalt whisky, whose name derives from the Mettertal river that drives the mill, is distilled and refined in the distillery next to the mill. Barrels for aging are sourced from various regions, including Barolo and Nebbiolo barrels from Canale in Piedmont. Own grain is grown for distillation; in the 1980s Wilhelm Fessler was recognized as a notable malt barley grower. Fessler Mühle offers selected whiskies from various Baden-Württemberg distilleries – region by region.
Products/Whisky Series
The main product is Mettermalt whisky, whose name comes from the Mettertal river that drives the mill. In addition, distillates and liqueurs are produced based on old recipes. The distillery is also behind alwa mettermalt gin with its own herbal mix and alwa spring water from Sersheim.
Visits/Experiences
Fesslermill1396 is home to Württemberg's first whisky club. Past events include whisky and spirit tastings (grappa, gin and much more), wine walks and special events such as whiskey meets shellac.
Philosophy
Regionality and tradition are central values for the Fessler family and the mill. The mill and the distillery connect centuries-old traditions with open collaboration to Piedmont via the Canale connection – including Barolo and Nebbiolo storage. Own grain and regional relationships with aging partners are important parts of the approach.
