History

Villa Waalem sits in the heart of the Wadden Sea, was built in a 19th‑century style, and has an attached winery – a special place for gourmets, explorers, entrepreneurs and scientists. Weingut Waalem is run by a family focused on North Frisian identity and tradition, and the distillery is described as 'The Distillery of the Commanders: Inspired by seafaring, refined on Föhr – the captains' heritage in the glass.'

Production and Terroir

Wine production on the island of Föhr is shaped by pure sea air, North Frisian sun and a mild North Sea climate. The estate spans about six hectares, and all grapes are hand-picked – part of the philosophy is 'Quality over Quantity' and craftsmanship at every step. The distillery produces four unique spirits inspired by skipper tradition: ROELOFFS GIN, RÖRDEN APPLE SPIRIT, RIEWERTS RUM and PAULSEN RYE WHISKEY.

Products and Whisky-Related Series

Waalem also has wines under 'FRIENDS OF WAALEM' in collaboration with Uitkyk in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The first two red wines are Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon; these wines provide character, depth and finesse and serve as a symbolic link between the Nordic regions and South Africa. The range also includes WAALEM BRUT, WAALEM RÉSERVE, WAALEM KUL and Vermouth in both red and white versions.

Visits and Experiences

Geniessen & Erleben mentions unique wine and spirits experiences – each product carries North Sea character. The website notes that public wine tours took place in 2024 every Tuesday at 5:00 PM, and private individual tastings are possible for larger groups (minimum 20 people). There are plans for a new growth event in 2025 with opening in the summer of 2025, and there is also mention of the possibility of individual wine tastings from 2026 in a new format. The villa also offers opportunities for stands and private events, including civil weddings, and there is a Captain's Hall with a view.

Weddings and Events

Villa Waalem can be used for weddings. Civil weddings are arranged through Standesamt Föhr-Amrum, while there are also non-religious weddings by arrangement. Capische areas such as 'Sverige' and 'Captain's Hall' are described as settings for the ceremonies, with views of the Wadden Sea and the vineyards.

Philosophy

Constant sea breeze, rough North Sea climate – wine and spirits bear the mark of the island's terroir. The island of Föhr influences the grapes through sea air, sun and a culture of craftsmanship. The core of the business is quality over quantity, craftsmanship and a dedicated team that lives by a motto around openness, clear goals and the community around 'Rüm Haart, Klaar Kiming.'
