Historie
Brennerei Ziegler is a German distillery with roots dating back to 1865. Originally operated as a brewery with distilling rights and based in Freudenberg am Main, where the aim has been to produce excellent products that please top international restaurateurs and gourmets. The philosophy is that distillation is an art, and that quality and traditional craftsmanship are at the center, while the company is not afraid to embrace progress and ongoing improvements.
Produktion / Fremstilling
Their approach combines tradition and progress. Experience and craft go hand in hand with a pursuit of optimization. Examples range from No. 1 Wild Cherry, which is harvested by cone pickers in southern Germany and aged as brandy for five years, to Alte Zwetschge Old Plum, which is aged in chestnut or oak casks for up to five years and offers notes of orange, chestnut and cinnamon. Freudenberger Wildwiesen Cuvée consists of locally sourced fruits such as Elstar and Gute Luise and supports the Ziegler Wild Meadow Fund (five euros per bottle).
Whisky: Freud Whisky
Freud Whisky is Ziegler's malt whisky and is presented as original and not a reinterpretation of others' products. The whisky matures in chestnut and ex-bourbon casks and finishes in Alte Zwetschge casks to impart fruity and nutty notes. There are two well-known releases: Distillers Cut and Distillers Decade, both around 41.5% ABV. Distillers Cut is described as aged with two maturation stages and a final finish, while Distillers Decade undergoes a longer process with initial aging in Spessart oak and chestnut, followed by nine years in bourbon casks and finishing in Alte Zwetschge cask. This approach positions Freud within a new-world whisky landscape, without being a copy.
