History

Brennerei Ehringhausen is located in Westphalia (Werne) and rests on a 700-year tradition. The current family business was founded as Kornbrenneri in 1962 by the grandparents Heinrich Glitz-Ehringhausen and Anneliese Ehringhausen. In 2012, Theres and Georg Glitz-Ehringhausen took over and continued the craft with a focus on grain and sustainability, while experimenting with flavors and local ingredients. The company emphasizes ecology and regional origin and works with nature through sustainable solutions and creative distillation methods.

Production/Manufacturing

Grain distillation starts with sorting and milling the grain shortly before mashing to preserve freshness. The mash is mixed with water from their own well and ferments in vessels. The primary distillation is conducted in columns, resulting in a raw spirit of around 85% ABV. The heart of the distillation (the middle cut) is separated and redistilled to obtain Feinbrand with high aroma (around 96% ABV). The Feinbrand is aged for at least three years in oak casks, after which it is bottled. We store and tailor the spirits using steam from a steam generator that uses heat from an on-farm biogas plant, and the byproducts of mashing are used as animal feed. Great emphasis is placed on organic raw materials and sustainability, and the packaging is environmentally friendly.

Philosophy

Brennerei Ehringhausen describes eight commitments to itself: We take our time; we distill with heart; we continually experiment; quality is a promise; we work with nature and are sustainable; grain can do more than a traditional image suggests; we ask questions and continually improve; and flavor should be visible in packaging and design. The company emphasizes the use of regionally and organically grown raw materials and energy-efficient solutions (biogas and steam). Grain stands as a central inspiration in the company’s history and products.
