Historie

Nightside Distillery was founded in 2013 by Tom Greene, a longshoreman who worked night shifts on the docks in Seattle. Tom wanted to create a spirit that was authentic and hard-working like himself.

After many years of making and blending, Tom developed what he thought was the best Apple Pie Vodka. But he missed a quality spirit to mix it with, and thus started Nightside Distillery.

In the beginning, production was done in a 15-gallon Boka still and in a 440-square-foot room, and the distillery may have been the smallest and lowest-budget. Over time he developed a program that produced a nationally recognized Gold Medal Vodka. To grow and introduce more products, he decided to bring on hands-on partners like him.

Thereafter the Then and Now section says that Nightside today has products in Vodka, Gin, Whisky and Aquavit. In 2020 we expanded our operation by opening a new and improved tasting room so customers could stop by, enjoy a cocktail and a conversation. We are now celebrating our 10-year anniversary and look forward to another decade of spirit production.

Our whiskies are aged for at least 3 years. Our whiskies include three types: - Rye (Straight Rye): 4-grain? No, Rye is 100% malted rye. (3+ years aging) - Single Malt: 100% malted barley. - Bourbon: Four-grain (maize, rye, malted barley, oats) with 3+ years aging.

Barrel sourcing: Our barrels come from the Midwest and are smoked and toasted (toasted and charred) in American oak.

Whodka: Vodka rested in a used bourbon barrel to give Bourbon notes, but with the clean and smooth body of vodka.

Over time Nightside has also expanded its production to gin and aquavit as well as Bourbon Cream Liqueur and Apple Pie Vodka (the first spirit our company was built around). In the beginning our equipment was small-scale and it was a 15-gallon Boka still.

Nightside is Local and Growing. We value community and support local charitable causes such as The Fair Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Do the Right Thing Diaper Bank, Edgewood Athletic Assoc. Little League, Nourish Food Bank, and Tacoma Little Theatre. We love making spirits at a reasonable price and strive for elegant, handcrafted drinks that fit everyday life in Edgewood and the surrounding areas. Our name Nightside stands for the night shift on the docks and symbolizes the working people who are our heroes, and our spirits as a tribute to them.
