History

Montana Whiskey Co. was founded with the goal of creating something beyond the ordinary that truly reflects the essence of Montana: the beauty of nature, wildlife, wide-open spaces, and the tireless spirit among the people of the state. The aim is that a dram of whiskey speaks to the part of you that values things done right.

The founder is Todd Berg, born and raised in Montana. His background includes service as a Marine, a pilot, and work on major construction projects across the Pacific region and Africa, after which he returned to Montana to create fine spirits that reflect the state and everything it stands for.

Production / Manufacturing

The whiskey is aged in barrels stacked in our rickhouse, where temperature swings are large—truly Montana-scale. This expansion and contraction draw more character from the charred oak over time. Through careful selection of barrels, the artistic blending of our unique mash bills, and high-quality water, we create whiskey that is of high quality, easy to drink, and reasonably priced. The production is underscored by a sense that our whiskey is praised even by those who are not from Montana.

Our bottle isn't a traditional bottle, but a steel bottle that is rugged enough to handle an adventurous lifestyle — drifting downriver in a drift boat, resting by a campfire, or taking a sailing trip in a sack.

  • Blackfoot River Bourbon — Aged under Montana's extreme conditions and offers notes of rich caramel, spicy rye and a touch of oak, with a fresh finish. Bottle size 750 ml, 80 proof. Available in several states and online.
  • Straight Whiskey — A grain-forward whiskey with a smooth start, a hint of rye, and a dry, caramel finish. 750 ml, 80 proof. Available in Montana.
  • Northern Bourbon — Our 'Northern' bourbon, with minimal corn content and a spicy high-rye start with a caramel finish. 750 ml, 80 proof. Available in Montana.

Drink Recipes

We have a number of simple drinks you can try at home: - Old Fashioned — 2 oz Montana Whiskey Co. Bourbon, 1/2 tsp raw sugar, 3 dashes of bitters. Muddle the sugar and bitters, add ice and bourbon, and garnish with an orange peel. - Simplest Drink Ever — 2 oz Montana Whiskey Co. Bourbon or Whiskey, enjoy neat or in a simple drink. - Whiskey Sour — 2 oz bourbon or whiskey, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup. Shake with ice, strain, and garnish. - Whiskey Ginger — 2 oz whiskey, 1/4 lime, topped with ginger beer. - Manhattan — 2 oz whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, a dash of bitters. Stir with ice, strain, and garnish with a cherry.

Our goal is to produce high-quality spirits that are easy to drink and affordable, and that the concept of fine spirits for the great outdoors goes hand in hand with the rugged Montana spirit. From the beginning we have believed that our whiskey speaks to the part of you that values things done right.
