Overview of the Distillery
Hard Truth Distilling Co. sits on a 325-acre forested campus in Brown County, Indiana, combining a modern sweet mash distillery with guest experiences such as a restaurant, tours, and live music. From the first distillations in 2015, the distillery has developed a broad program of small-batch bourbons and rye whiskeys, while establishing itself as a regional visitor destination.
History
Hard Truth began in 2015 as a small craft-distillery operation in the upper room of Big Woods Pizza Co. in downtown Nashville, Indiana. Rapid growth led in 2017 to the initiation of construction on a 325-acre property, where the Tours & Tastings Center opened to guests in late 2017. In the summer of 2018, the Restaurant at Hard Truth opened, and in the fall of 2018 production moved into a new, state-of-the-art sweet mash facility. In the following years the campus has developed with music venues, events and special experiences. In November 2021 the distillery marked its first Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey release, showcasing the ambition to deliver aged, small-batch whiskeys based on their grain-to-glass approach.
Raw Materials and Production
Hard Truth's production approach is built on a grain-to-glass philosophy with a clearly sweet mash process at its core. The distillery uses Vendome Copper & Brass Works equipment in its 18,000-square-foot facility. The range is filled into its own rackhouse, where Indiana rye and bourbon are stored. The production focus is on small-batch rye and bourbon expressions, including wheated and multi-grain blends. The text points to internal control of raw materials ('All Indiana Grain' in one of the blends) and a workflow where distillation, aging, and release occur on the same campus, enabling control of the entire value chain.
Maturation and Barrel Types
Hard Truth uses both traditional barrels and finish experiments to shape its expressions. There are 7-year releases, double-oaked editions, and a Barrel Finish Reserve series, where selected casks are finished in toasted French oak. A forthcoming release in the series will be finished in Mizunara oak. Rackhouse aging on the campus is used consistently, and selected casks (for example 23 casks for a French Oak finish) are handpicked for special finish releases.
Whiskies
The range centers on hard mash/sweet mash whiskies with both rye and bourbon expressions. The core range includes sweet mash bourbons and rye whiskies, as well as special series such as 7 Year releases and Barrel Finish Reserve, where the distillery experiments with different finish casks. In addition, Hard Truth releases double-oaked variants and blends built on their All Indiana Grain approach. The portfolio includes both ongoing small-batch releases and seasonal, cask-selected bottles, often released on campus or at special events.
