History Dampfwerk Distilling was established in 2016 as a family-owned distillery in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Their goal is to create outstanding spirits to be enjoyed with friends and family, and the name Dampfwerk means 'Steam Works', reflecting the central role steam plays in the distillation process. They imported a hand-forged copper still from the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and work closely with local fruit growers and suppliers to produce spirits of the highest quality under strict standards. The idea of starting a distillery arose after many years of reflection on the lost German culinary culture in the USA, and the dream to revive that culture drives their efforts to make premium craft spirits for family and friends.
Owner Ralf comes from Muhldorf, Germany, and has 25 years' experience building and running businesses in the global food and beverage industry. The assistant Mary (co-proprietor) comes from Minnesota and brings experience in operations, design and construction. Head Distiller Christian is in the lab and works with mash bills and finishes to ensure high quality and consistency. Creative Director Bridgit is responsible for branding and marketing. The family emphasizes an approach that blends traditional European 'edelbranntweine' with American creativity and a twist that gives their products a varied character. Their overarching vision is to recreate premier craft spirits that can be enjoyed in community.
Production / Manufacturing Dampfwerk focuses on steam-powered distillation and uses a hand-hammered copper still imported from Germany (Black Forest / Baden-Württemberg). The still is steam-cooled and designed to be gentle on the product, which is said to preserve aromas and esters in the distillation. For American single malt whiskey, malted barley (pale ale malt with chocolate, toffee, and caramel malts) is used. Christian, the whiskey distiller, uses two yeast strains for this single malt: cultured wine yeast and distillation yeast, and the mineral content of the water is tested and shows similarities to Highland water. The whiskey ages in used red wine barrels to impart notes of dried red fruits and a balanced sweetness. According to descriptions, Batch 4 is blended with a specific amount of Batch 3 to preserve depth and coherence of flavor. The hand-hammered still is produced as a way to be as gentle as possible on the product and preserve aromas during the distillation process.
Products / Whisky Series - American Single Malt Whiskey (Batch 4): A smooth whiskey reminiscent of Highland Scotch without peat notes. It has a characteristic grainy aroma and peanut brittle and a note of dried red fruits from aging in used red wine barrels. The mash bill consists of pale ale malt with chocolate, toffee and caramel malts. Two yeast strains are used: cultured wine yeast and distillation yeast. The whiskey is blended with Batch 3 to ensure depth and continuity. It uses Minnesota heritage grains and malting, with production in Minnesota.

Philosophy Dampfwerk describes itself as a brand characterized by innovation, creativity and enduring simplicity. The family emphasizes the importance of learning along the way and often rejects titles such as Master Distiller in favor of a learning approach — 'We are learning' — and the ability to explore new directions. They blend traditional European craft spirits (edelbranntweine) with American style and design, and they carry a twist in their approach to alcohol with a focus on quality, craftsmanship and relationships with local ingredients and partners. Their principles include being proud of the craft, using high-quality raw materials, and preserving a playful and innovative vibe in their products and experiences.
