History

  • Copper Mule Distillery is owned by Don and Jeanne Gosen and honors Jeanne's great-great-grandfather Captain Gustav Wohlt, who helped found Hermann Distilling Company in 1893.
  • The Copper Mule name honors the Kallmeyer family’s mules, which graze on the property since 1910.
  • Timeline:
  • 1862: Captain Gustav Wohlt is born.
  • 1870: Frank Gosen, Don's great-great-grandfather, purchases Gosen Century Farm in Rhineland, Missouri.
  • 1893: Gustav Wohlt founds Hermann Distilling Company.
  • 1903: Henry Eggers, Don's great-grandfather, opens Eggers Milling Company in Hermann, and mills grain for cooking, brewing and distilling.
  • 1908: Julius Kallmeyer, Jeanne's great-grandfather, buys the Copper Mule property and begins breeding mules.
  • 1916: The Kallmeyers sell mules to the US Army during WWI.
  • 2001: Don and Jeanne open Bauernhof Brewery in Hermann.
  • 2014: Don and Jeanne begin rejuvenating the Kallmeyer Farm with a residence, vineyards and the beginnings of Copper Mule Distillery.
  • 2019: Copper Mule Distillery is founded by Don and Jeanne Gosen.

Visits / Experiences

  • Tours, Tastings, and Special Events are located just minutes outside Hermann, MO.
  • Tour times are 11 and 13 (11:00 AM and 1:00 PM). Reservations are recommended 24 hours in advance.

  • No tours on Sundays; the visitor center has views and indoor/outdoor seating; gift shop and snacks.
  • Moonshine Still Collection: See the World's Largest Moonshine Still Collection.
  • Pets: Dogs must be leashed, max 6 feet. The leash holder must be in control. Leashed pets are allowed in the lower gravel area; No pets at Bourbon Bash or Octoberfest.
  • From Hermann's town center, head east on Hwy 100 for 1 mile, turn right (across from the Industrial Park). Drive 1/2 mile to the visitor center.
