Casey Jones Distillery
Overview of the Distillery
Casey Jones Distillery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, is a family-owned distillery centered around a hand-built, square copper pot still and recipes passed down from three generations. The distillery produces small-batch bourbons and moonshine, combines historic craftsmanship with onsite aging, and displays original equipment that connects today’s production with Prohibition-era traditions.
History
The history traces back to grandfather Casey Jones, a renowned still builder in Golden Pond/’Land Between the Lakes’, who for more than 30 years built portable copper stills, developed an efficient cylindrical condenser, and ended up with a two-year prison sentence for bootlegging. Casey built his last still in 1967; that still is today a physical reference point for the distillery. His grandson Arlon “AJ” Casey Jones and AJ's wife Peg Hays founded Casey Jones Distillery in 2014 to carry on the family recipes and craftsmanship. AJ has built a replica of his grandfather's square copper pot still and still distills the batches by hand. In 2022, Cody Turner came on board as partner and helped expand the distillery's program. In 2026, the distillery marked its role in the nation's anniversary celebrations with the launch of Revere Bourbon and the limited single-barrel series The Brave.
Raw Materials and Production
At the heart of the production is a square copper pot still, hand-built by Master Distiller AJ as a replica of his grandfather's design. Copper stills are used consistently — a tradition from Casey Jones's still-building — and each batch is distilled in small batches. The distillate is made on several mash bills: moonshine and certain single barrels on a 50/50 corn-and-cane mash bill, while the bourbon products use classic bourbon grains such as corn, rye, and malted barley in varying percentages (e.g., 96/3/1 and 80/16/4). AJ personally runs the production with family recipes and draws on both the original still design and modern rickhouse aging to create both unfinished and finished versions. The distillery combines craftsmanship, onsite aging, and batch-by-batch control, and equipment as well as an original still are exhibited in the distillery lounge as part of the narrative.
Aging and Barrel Types
The distillery uses onsite rickhouses and American white oak in aging its bourbon offerings; some releases are aged in Kelvin Cooperage oak. There are experiments with secondary finishes and triple-casking, including Amburana finish for special barrel cuts. The Brave series was aged at least four years in Kelvin Cooperage oak and bottled at cask strength, while Revere Bourbon has aged five years in American white oak.
Whiskies
The portfolio ranges from traditional small-batch bourbons (several mash bills and age statements) to barrel cuts and moonshines. The core range includes Small Batch bourbons, Total Eclipse products, and moonshines based on the 50/50 corn-and-cane mash bill. In addition to the ongoing releases, the distillery launches limited series and single-barrel releases such as Revere Bourbon (2026) and the three-part The Brave series, as well as special finish editions such as Amburana Finished Barrel Cut, honey-finished, and wine/fruit-finished batches.
