History
- From the rural hills in Wyoming County to Buffalo, the City of Good Neighbors. The company started in a small barn with a homemade pot still, and a family friend, the southern moonshiner 'Cowboy Bob', taught us the fundamentals of distillation.
- In 2012 we applied for the DSP- and NYS Class D Farm permit, which required at least 75% NY State-grown ingredients (we use 100%). The license allows direct sales to consumers as well as retail without a distributor, making it possible to compete with larger producers and support local agriculture.
- In 2016 we moved back to the city's 'City of Good Neighbors' neighborhood, Buffalo, and opened in Duchmann & Son's Wagon Factory (1890) in the Larkin District at 860 Seneca St. We designed and installed our own pot stills, mash tanks and steam systems and opened a cocktail bar and tasting room at the same time.
- Buffalo Distilling Company is a distillery described as 'A Distillery 100 Years in the Making'. In 1883 Buffalo Distilling Company was founded by Gustav Fleischmann, and they produced among others Golden Grain Whiskey, 4C's Canadian Style Whiskey, Old Monongahela Whiskey, Old Tom Gin and Maple Gin. In 1914 Fleischmann's company shut down to avoid Prohibition and the business slept for 98 years, before being revived 98 years later in Bennington, NY.
- Founders of the modern Buffalo Distilling Company are Andy, Frank and Eric.
- What about the name? It's not a marketing trick or a family joke – it's a simple decoration of a rooster on the side of a barn. The story of the rooster and the city's farming roots ties the fabric of our production together and underscores a moment of fun and work ethic.
Production / Manufacturing
- We work from a farm-to-bottle perspective and use locally grown grain from Western New York; our DSP policy and NYS law ensure 100% NY-state ingredients for spirit production and enable direct sales to consumers without intermediaries.
- Our facilities are developed with customized pot stills, mash tanks and steam systems, and the distillery also includes a cocktail bar and a tasting room where visitors can experience the process and the story behind the production.
