History

Breckenridge Distillery has evolved into both a production facility and an experience site for spirits enthusiasts. In 2021 the distillery was highlighted by Whisky Magazine as 'Visitor Attraction of the Year' (Highly Commended). Over time the site has won numerous awards in competitions, including several titles such as Colorado Whiskey Distillery of the Year at the New York International Spirits Competition. In 2025 the distillery launched Breckenridge Honey Whiskey as a limited-release in collaboration with the Denver Broncos; the honey-based release has since been incorporated into the core portfolio. Parallel to the commercial releases, the distillery has built a range of guest experiences and club activities, including Dark Arts Society and special cask tastings, where the Master Distiller opens selected casks.

Raw materials and production

The production profile spans a wide range: Breckenridge makes bourbon, rye, single barrel and double barrel editions, as well as malt-based whiskies under the Dark Arts series, and at the same time produces vodka, gin and rum-related releases. Dark Arts highlights whisky distilled from a malt mash, and names like Peat Fetish show that peated/peaty whisky is also in the range. The distillery actively works with casks for finish editions and with hand-selected single casks, which the Master Distiller presents at special tastings. Guests often gain insight into the process via tours and practical workshops such as blending labs, where they taste from casks and compose their own blends.

Maturation and types of casks

Maturation plays a central role in Breckenridge releases: port, PX sherry, Madeira, rum and cognac casks are actively used to finish whiskies. Single barrel releases and cask-strength openings are offered at events such as 'Secrets of the Cask', where unreleased casks are tasted directly from the barrels. These choices of prior content in casks are a clear tactic to create differentiated expressions in the portfolio, and the distillery goes to great lengths to present these casks to guests and buyers.

Whiskies

The portfolio covers a broad spectrum: the classic Breckenridge Bourbon is flanked by variants such as High Proof, Single Barrel, Double Barrel and a Rye edition, as well as several cask-finish products (PX sherry, port, Madeira, rum and cognac). There are also experimental and special series such as Dark Arts (malt mash), Peat Fetish and seasonal or limited releases. In addition to whisky, the distillery offers vodka, gin, spiced editions, rum-related finishes and non-alcoholic 'Mock One' products. Honey Whiskey, originally a 2025 limited-release, is now integrated into the core range.

Whiskies' style and flavor profile

Breckenridge releases lean toward malt sweetness (butterscotch/caramel), fruitiness (candied orange and apple) and honey sweetness in the named Honey Whiskey. These elements appear in the descriptions of the bourbon edition and in Honey Whiskey, which was developed with Goldswarm honey to add natural sweetness and mouthfeel. The combination of fruit, malt sweetness, and honey recurs across several products and in the cocktails built around them.

Visit the distillery

The distillery offers several visitor formats: free 30-minute production tours (first-come, first-served, limited to small groups) and paid guided tours ($25) lasting 45 minutes, which require a reservation and are held Wed–Sun at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 at 1925 Airport Road. Private 60-minute VIP tours can be booked on request and include deeper insights and occasional tastings of unreleased products. There are also tasting experiences such as Founder's Experience, cask tastings, blending labs and opportunities to bottle your own blend. Guests must be at least 10 years old to participate in tours and 21+ to taste alcohol. Complimentary tastings are offered at Airport Road and Main Street with tasting hours listed on the destination pages.
