History

The idea for Weldon Mills arose between founders Bruce Tyler and Michael Hinderliter, and the distillery has since grown into a prominent name in competitions. Master Distiller Mike Norman was a central figure whose recipes and small-batch methods laid the foundation for the house's production and quality. The location by the Roanoke River and the area's natural sources are important elements of the story, as is the local corn from North Carolina. Over time, the range has expanded from core bourbons to single-barrel releases and limited editions, and the house highlights numerous awards from 2021 onward.

Raw Materials and Production

Production at Weldon Mills is based on small-batch distillation in small-scale stills with a clear local grounding. Water from the Roanoke River and nearby sources is used as part of the ingredient base, while the grains—corn, barley, and wheat—are sourced locally in North Carolina. Several expressions are bottle-fed at barrel proof, and the house runs a single-barrel program (Norman’s 53), where each barrel bottled at barrel proof highlights the barrel's individual character. A notable production method is The All Malt, created exclusively from malted grains and thus distinct from typical bourbons. The small-batch philosophy and the preservation of Mike Norman's recipes shape both standard releases and experimental series.

Aging and Cask Types

Aging takes place in barrels; several of the house's bourbons are marketed as barrel-proof or small-batch aged, and Norman’s 53 is a single-barrel concept, where each barrel is its own bottling. A concrete example of cask use is that Rey Coyote Tequila Reposado is finished aging in Weldon Mills' bourbon casks. The house highlights the barrel's role in shaping individual expressions but mainly keeps the focus on the barrel-proof approach and single-barrel presentations.
