Brief overview of the distillery
Glen Scotia is located in Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula, in the small port town that was once called the world’s whisky capital. The distillery is one of the few remaining in the region and stands out with its historic facilities from the 1830s, its maritime style, and a range that spans classic single malts to rare older releases and festival bottlings.
History
The story begins in 1832, when Scotia Distillery was founded in Campbeltown. Already in 1835, the city was one of Scotland’s major whisky centres, with nearly 30 active distilleries, and Campbeltown later earned its reputation as the Whisky Capital of the World. It was a period when the town thrived on the back of trade, the port, and production. Today, Glen Scotia stands as one of the last three remaining distilleries in the area, and much of the original form is still preserved in the facilities, including the mash tun, the stillhouse, fermenters, and the dunnage warehouse from the 1830s. The distillery itself highlights that it is a small place with a great legacy—and that legacy runs straight into the whiskies bottled here today. In more recent times, Glen Scotia has made its mark with both regional and international awards, including Scotland’s Whisky Distillery of the Year 2021 and with 25 Year Old as Best in Show at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021.
Raw materials and production
Glen Scotia works with single malt whisky made from malted barley and buys Scottish malt today according to its own specification, because the distillery no longer malts itself. Production is described as traditional and hand-driven, and the small team carries out most of the work by hand. At the same time, they have adjusted the method over time with longer fermentation, vatting of the malted barley, and a slower, more meticulous distillation. The distillery produces both peated and non-peated whisky, and the smoky spirit is typically made for only about six weeks per year. The whisky is matured on site in warehouses close to Campbeltown Loch, which is a clear part of the house’s identity and explains the distinctive maritime character repeated throughout the range.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation is defined by classic bourbon and sherry styles. First fill bourbon barrels and refill American oak casks provide backbone and sweetness, while Oloroso sherry is used for both short and longer finishes. Several releases get their character from the combination of bourbon maturation and a final period in sherry casks, and the festival releases also show more experimental finishes such as white port, Ribera del Duero red wine, Ruby Port, and Pedro Ximénez. Glen Scotia 48 Year Old goes even further with a long journey through refill and first-fill bourbon, then oloroso hogshead, and finally a finish in an ex-Pedro Ximénez hogshead. It’s clear that casks aren’t just used to round things off, but as an active tool for building layers of fruit, spice, sweetness, and a preserved coastal profile.
Whiskies
The core range centres around 12, 15, 18, 21, and 25 years, flanked by Victoriana, Double Cask, Harbour, and special releases such as 32 Year Old and 48 Year Old. In addition, there is the Campbeltown Malts Festival series, which changes expression from year to year and often uses peated spirit and distinctive cask finishes. The portfolio therefore spans everything from more accessible, fruity, and maritime expressions to deeper, more complex, and collector-focused bottles. Common to them all is that they carry the classic Campbeltown signature with salt, sea air, oiliness, ripe fruit, and a distinct coastal character.

The style and tasting profile of the whiskies
The style centres on maritime freshness, ripe fruit, and warm sweetness. Sea spray, saltiness, and coastal nuances appear in several releases, while tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus, red apples, apricot, sultana, and berries provide a fruity core. In addition, there is vanilla, toffee, caramel, and honey, which bind the whisky together—often lifted by cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, or star anise. The smoky expressions add bonfire, peat smoke, and salinity, but even the peated bottles normally keep the maritime Campbeltown backbone.
Visit the distillery
The distillery can be visited, and both tours and whisky tastings are available. In addition, Glen Scotia has a distillery shop and also opens its doors in connection with the annual Campbeltown Malts Festival, which takes place for one week every May. The visit takes place at a lively historic distillery, where the original buildings and production rooms are part of the experience, and where guests get insight into a whisky production that is still kept close to traditional methods.
