History
Sang Froid Distilling is a small, craft distillery focused on fruit-based brandies, rye whiskey, and Dutch-style gins. The distillery was started by two brothers-in-law and is driven by the desire to produce authentic spirits inspired by European and early American traditions, using the best locally sourced ingredients.
Production and Manufacturing
For our seasonal fruit brandies we use heirloom fruits from our own orchard in Western Maryland, we harvest wild fruits, and we also buy fruit from Maryland and Pennsylvania farms (the furthest distance the fruit travels is about 120 miles). We use only whole fruits, and all of our fruit ferments naturally using the ambient yeasts on the fruit skins. For the most part the fruit is not sprayed (or minimally sprayed, as much as possible). Unsprayed and wild fruits, such as apples and pears, often look different from grocery store fruit, but they frequently have superior flavor and make fantastic brandy.
For our whiskies and gins we source all of our grain from Maryland farms – rye and spelt come from Migrash Farm just outside Baltimore, and the malted barley comes from Amber Fields Malting just outside Frederick. We mash, ferment, and double-pot-distill (and age) all of our grain spirits at our modest distillery in Hyattsville, MD.
Products and Whiskey Series
Our offerings include fruit brandies, rye whiskey, and Dutch-style gins. Rye whiskey is part of our whiskey lineup, and we double-pot-distill and age all of our grain spirits in Hyattsville.
Visits and Experiences
We have a tasting room in Hyattsville, MD, where visitors can come to sample our spirits. You can contact us by email or follow us on social media.
Philosophy
We are rehabilitating an abandoned fruit orchard in Western Maryland and combine our approach to fruit production with the desire to use the best ingredients close to us and to stay true to our traditions and flavors.
