History Established in 1997, Ransom is an alembic distillery, artisan wine company, and vermouth house. Located in Oregon's Willamette Valley, at the foot of the Coast Range, Ransom comprises a 40-acre organic farm, a vineyard, and a distillery. Construction of the buildings and vineyards began in 2008 and 2010, respectively. The farm has been organically certified since 2011, and the distillery was organically certified in 2021. Ransom was founded by Tad Seestedt, who moved west from New York and laid the groundwork for a Sheridan-based farm with wine production and a distillery. In 1997, Tad began distilling and revived Old Tom Gin (aged in oak), and the name Ransom was chosen in connection with paying off the bank's debt. The mission is based on six principles called the Ransom Way: 1) Don't cut corners 2) Farm everything organically 3) Be good earthlings – stewards of the land (reuse and recycle) 4) Be unique – using unconventional methods 5) Be meticulous – hands-on (no robots) and focus on small-batch production 6) Celebrate life in good health and good spirits. We distill our spirits in a hand-forged, direct-fire French alembic pot still and make all cuts by taste and smell, with no robots. Base wort mashes are fermented on-site weekly in small batches, using locally sourced and organic grains where possible and barley grown on our own farm.
Production / Manufacturing Ransom showcases a hand-forged, direct-fire French alembic cuvée pot still, where all cuts are made by taste and smell, with no robots. Base wort mash and fermentation occur on-site in small batches each week. They prioritize locally sourced and organic grains, and build on barley grown on their own farm. The production reflects a focus on terroir and sustainability: the farm has been organically certified since 2011 and the distillery since 2021. The No Robots philosophy and craftsmanship in small portions are central to the entire process.
